FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
  • Q: What are UA Record Equipped shoes?

UA Record Equipped Shoes are Under Armour's unique smart shoes. Built with the same award-winning technology that we put into every pair of our running shoes, they also have a built-in sensor chip that connects to the UA MapMyRun® app. That sensor tracks and stores the running metrics that matter to you so you know exactly how to get better.

  • Q: What Does “Record Equipped” Mean?

UA Record Equipped (RE) means these are Under Armour's smart shoes. Within each Record Equipped shoe is an embedded sensor that has been programmed to track all of your important running metrics. The sensor also connects to UA MapMyRun, where you can interact with the data you care about most to help you manage and improve your performance.

  • Q: How Do The Shoes Work?

There’s a small sensor chip built into the midsole of the right shoe. You won’t feel it at all when you’re running, but that sensor automatically tracks your performance data, including speed, pace, distance, and steps. The newest feature is a recovery measure in the form of a jump test with measures your body's fatigue.  Just open the box, connect your shoes with the UA MapMyRun app, and start running.

  • Q: Who Are These Shoes For?

Any runner who wants to track, store, and utilize performance data. With this shoe and the MVP premium service from UA MapMyRun (included with purchase), you get access to pace-based audio coaching that’s designed to help you become a better runner.

  • Q: Did UA Partner With A Technology Company To Make This Shoe?

Under Armour developed these shoes internally, and we partnered with leading experts across several disciplines to bring the technology to market.

  • Q: What Is The Price Of The Shoes?

    Speedform Gemini 3 RE - $159.99
    Speedform Europa RE - $159.99
    Speedform Velociti RE - $139.99

  • Q: What Premium App Subscriptions Come With The Purchase Of These Shoes?

UA Record Equipped shoes come with 1 year of free UA MapMyRun premium service.

  • Q: Where Can You Purchase UA Record Equipped Shoes?

UA Record Equipped shoes are available to purchase on UA.com, at our Brand House stores in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and at select run specialty and sporting goods retailers.

  • Q: How Are These Shoes Different From The Standard Models?

The only difference between the UA SpeedForm Gemini 2 and the UA SpeedForm Gemini 3 RE is the sensor technology built into the sole of shoe. All other performance benefits are the same, like ultra-responsive Charged Cushioning and the precision-fit UA SpeedForm upper. The built-in chip is fully embedded and sealed, and it never needs to be charged. You won’t see it, feel it, or even notice it when you’re working out.

  • Q: What Are The Advantages Of This Product Over Competitor Products?

Competitor sensors have often been “shake sensors,” which leads to incorrect and inaccurate data. As part of our commitment to building authentic performance gear, UA Record Equipped shoes deliver real, accurate, authentic information. And, unlike other systems, we can update ours remotely. This lets us add features and improve your shoe long after you buy it.

  • Q: Can I Log My Runs Through UA Record?

At this time, you can’t track or sync your UA Record Equipped running shoes directly to UA Record. However, tracking your runs in UA MapMyRun will appear in UA Record as logged runs. This is also true for syncing your Autostart runs from the shoes to UA MapMyRun.

  • Q: Where Is The Sensor Located In The Shoes?

The sensor is embedded in the midsole of the right shoe. For a closer look at where the sensor is housed, check out the picture on the lid of your shoebox or visit connect.ua.com now.

  • Q: Are There Sensors In Both Shoes in a Pair?

No. The sensor is only in the right shoe.

  • Q: Is It A GPS Sensor?

No. The sensor is a 3-axis motion sensor.

  • Q: Do The Shoes Have a Bluetooth Connection?

The shoes are compatible with any Bluetooth Smart Ready device through companion apps like UA MapMyRun.

  • Q: Why Is The Sensor Embedded And Not Removable?

A fully embedded, non-removable sensor is vital for accuracy. Embedding the UA Record Equipped sensor ensures that the shoes are only analyzing actual running strides in their calculations.

  • Q: Are The Shoes Waterproof, And Can I Run In The Rain?

The shoes' sensor is fully embedded and secured in a leak-proof casing, so the technology is not susceptible to damage from running in the rain or through puddles and snowy/icy surfaces.

  • Q: How much does the sensor weigh?

The sensor weighs approximately 7 grams.

  • Q: What Is The Lifespan Of These Shoes?

While the lifespan of any pair of shoes differs based on intensity level and type of activity, we suggest the lifespan is approximately 400 miles.

  • Q: Should I Recycle This Shoe Because It Has a Battery?

The disposal of electronic devices is regulated by city, region, and country. Please contact your local recycling service center to determine how to appropriately dispose of any shoes that have a CR2032 non-removable battery.

  • Q: Will I Have to Charge The Battery?

No. The battery is optimized to outlive the shoe and is not replaceable.

  • Q: How Long Does The Battery Last?

The life of the battery was designed to exceed 400 miles of active workout tracking and has a shelf life of more than 3 years.

  • Q: Is The Battery Waterproof?

The electronic housing is waterproof and will not be damaged when the shoes gets wet.

  • Q: What Performance Data is Tracked?

    - Speed/Pace: MPH· Average pace per mile/km
    - Average stride length: The distance between the heel strike of the same foot
    during activity
    - Distance: How far you have run
    - Shoe Life: Total number of steps taken over the life of the shoe
    - Cadence: The number of times your foot touches the ground per minute
    - Workout summaries, including time, date, duration, and splits

  • Q: Will They Track Walking?

The shoes track every step you take. The steps, speed, and distance can be
actively displayed through the app for either walking or running.

  • Q: How Many Workouts Can Be Saved In The Shoes?

The shoes will internally store up to 5 runs before you need to sync your data with UA MapMyRun. The maximum limit per workout file is 6 hours or 47 units of measurement, which would be either 47 kilometers (metric users) or 47 miles (imperial users).

  • Q: How Long Can Data Be Saved In The Shoes?

There is no time limit to how long your data can be saved. The shoes will keep your last 5 workouts in its memory until the battery is dead.

  • Q: What Happens When I Go For The 6th Run If I Haven’t Synced My Shoes To The App?

If you don’t sync your shoes before your sixth run, your first run will be deleted. It is a “first in, first out” method.

  • Q: How Fast Do I Have To Run For The Shoes To Start Tracking?

You can track at any speed if you’re using a companion app like UA MapMyRun by simply pressing Start. To automatically track runs without a phone or companion device (untethered running), you need to run an 11 minute/mile pace for three minutes.

  • Q: When Do The Shoes Know That I Stopped My Run?

The shoes can tell whether you’re walking or running. If you’re walking for 3 or more minutes, the shoes will end your workout based on the moment you started to walk. If you’re using a companion app, you should end your workout on your device. Just to be safe, the shoes will automatically close your workout file after 5 minutes of inactivity.

  • Q: Do The Shoes Work For Interval Training? How?

You can use the shoes for interval training if you’re using them in conjunction with a companion app like UA MapMyRun. We don’t recommend using the untethered feature for data collection during interval training due to the pace variations associated with this type of workout.

  • Q: Why Do The Shoes Only Start Tracking At An 11 Minute/Mile Pace?

We chose the 11 minute/mile pace to activate the Autostart feature to ensure we’re only tracking true workouts and not “false” workouts, like jogging across the street to get quickly to the other side. This specific pace also takes into account slow starts, gait variance, and actual loft time, which is required for telling the difference between running and walking. However, the shoes' Autostop feature has no speed limit. Autostop will automatically mark the moment you start walking and will end your workout officially once you’ve walked for three minutes.

  • Q: Is Any Other Information Collected?

Yes. The shoes also keep track of its own lifespan by tracking every step you take and every workout you complete. When you reach 400 miles, we’ll send you a notification that it’s time to replace your shoes. This will help you avoid the injuries that can come from running on overly worn shoes.

  • Q: Where Does The Data Collected From These Shoes Go?

All of the data collected by the UA Record Equipped shoes is stored in the UA MapMyRun mobile app, which is part of the Under Armour Connected Fitness platform. The UA MapMyRun mobile app is available now for download on the Apple App Store or from the Google Play Store. As part of the Under Armour Connected Fitness family of apps, your workout information can also sync to UA Record. The data will also live locally on the chip in the shoe for a period of time.

  • Q: What Is the Jump Around?

The Jump Around is a feature of the UA Record Equipped shoe technology, a simple 6-jump jump test that measures the air time in your repeated jump performance to monitor muscle fatigue, inform your workout intensity, and help guide training.

  • Q: What does the Jump Around feature do?

-Measures your flight time from a series of repeated jumps
-Gives you a Jump Score, which comes with a suggestion for workout intensity
-Shows fatigue trends over time, and whether you're trending toward high, medium, or low fatigue

  • Q: How are jump tests used by coaches and elite athletes?

Coaches use jump performance tests together with other readiness indicators to monitor the impact of training load. By tracking the athlete's recovery and adaptation to training, they can plan a workout's intensity. Jump Tests provide a look at how your body is performing. Think of it as a battery-life indicator, a reflection of freshness that alerts you to deficits, as well as when you have the capacity for more training intensity.

  • Q: What is recovery?

Recovery refers to what happens to your body post-workout and before the next one. It involves how your muscles react and recover from training and repair themselves. The best way for athletes to combat muscle fatigue is to give themselves adequate recovery time, and to know how to structure their training schedules to avoid overtraining and injury.

  • Q: What is readiness?

Readiness is an overall term for an athlete's state of preparedness for a workout. It can encompass anything from levels of fatigue to the muscular strength needed for training.

  • Q: What are self-reported measures?

Self-reported measures are a way of documenting your perception of your body's current state. By recording your muscle soreness, sleep quality, and energy level, you can get a look at how your own perception balances with the physical status from your Jump Score. Both the self-reported measures and the jump test experience, help keep your ego in check when it comes to training.

  • Q: What is baselining?

Baselining is how you set your standard jump air time range. This lets the app provide you a Jump Score and workout suggestions.

  • Q: Why measure air time?

Air time is one of the simplest ways to define muscle performance, as it shows the body's ability to produce force.

It reflects both short-term muscle fatigue resulting from a strenuous workout and chronic fatigue that accumulates over days or weeks. Air time is referenced in scientific research as the most reliable marker of fatigue across a range of athlete types.

  • Q: What does a muscular fatigue trend indicate?

Fatigue is exhaustion that typically comes from either physical overexertion or illness. It leads to a deficit in your body's ability to produce force, which can result in poorer performance and injury.

The best way to combat fatigue is to give yourself adequate recovery time, and to know how to structure your training schedule. Low fatigue indicates you have more room to push your training, where a high fatigue trend could indicate the need to take it easy to help your muscles recover.

  • Q: How do Jump Scores work?

The app records the air time of six repeated jumps and takes the average of the four most similar readings. Jump Scores range anywhere from around 250-750 milliseconds of air time, with the average score typically between 350-450 milliseconds.

  • Q: Are Jump Scores prescriptive?

Jump test scores are feedback to simply factor into your workout intensity or training. They are not intended to be training prescriptions. Instead, they can help plan a workout, run, or training session. For example, you could use a Jump Score to inform a running route and to guide the duration and distance.

  • Q: Does my baseline jump score change or is it always the same?

As you continue to jump over time your baseline will adjust.

  • Q: Can I do use the Jump Around feature in my Gemini 2.1 RE shoes?

Yes, if you update your Gemini 2 or 2.1 RE shoes, you can use the Jump Around feature. Simply follow the prompts on the app to update your shoes.

  • Q: What if I just get stuck in the "Go Steady" zone? Is this a good thing?

Your zones reflect high, medium and low fatigue. If you maintain the same zone for more than 3 jump sessions, you should evaluate and consider altering your training and recovery. If you are trying to push your training? You should see "Go Easy" recommendations. If you're attempting to recover, you should see your scores increase and see "Go Steady" or "Go Hard." The zones are a powerful tool to help you identify your fatigue state, train better and ultimately improve your overall running performance.

  • Q: Do Record Equipped Shoes connect with the UA Band?

No, the shoes and UA Band are both devices that connect to our apps, but they do not connect to each other.

  • Q: Can I sync more than one pair of shoes to UA MapMyRun?( Example I want to run in a Velociti and a Gemini, will I need to do anything differently?)

Yes, you can pair multiple shoes in UA MapMyRun.

  • Q: If I run with UA heart rate headphones and Record Equipped shoes will my workout show up twice?

No, UA Heart Rate Headphones track different metrics than Record Equipped shoes. You can run with both devices and your workout will not show up twice. Your headphones will provide your heart rate zone and your shoes will provide the other metrics that matter to you and your running performance.

  • Q: If I run with the UA Band and Record Equipped shoes will my workout show up twice?

Yes, the UA Band will track a separate workout from UA MapMyRun.
