How to Choose the Best Running Shoes

To improve your running and chase your athletic dreams, you need the right running gear. But that doesn’t mean you need to shape your pursuits to fit a pair of shoes—the shoes should be the right fit for you as an individual athlete. The perfect pair should help by fitting your ambitions and your body.

When buying running shoes, here are three important things to consider:

  1. GOALS: What are your running goals?
  2. GAIT: What foot shape do you have and how does your foot strike the ground?

Each athlete’s running goals are unique. Your personal running journey is a useful tool to help guide you in choosing the right pair of running shoes. Think about why you’re running. Because running shoes are designed for different types of training, it’s important to be somewhat specific when identifying your goal.

  • I’m running to improve my fitness at the gym and/or around my neighborhood.

Casual runners should consider a lightweight, impact-reducing shoe. For runners just getting started, a shoe with a shock-absorbing midsole is extra helpful to reduce impact.

  • I’m running to improve my performance in another sport.

Athletes who put their effort into a primary sport and want to maintain their fitness off-season should assess the type of running their sport requires. For sports involving short, fast bursts, a shoe built for speed training is best. For sports that require moderate movement all game, try a shoe designed for longer distances.

Road Running Shoes

Road shoes are typically flexible, cushioned, and aerodynamic. They’re designed with a tread built to propel you forward on paved surfaces like concrete and asphalt.  If you tend to run on pavement, these shoes are for you. You can certainly take road shoes onto soft, smooth trails and expect them to perform well. Just be careful about wearing them on rugged trails.

If you train on uneven, rocky, or otherwise variable terrain, you’ll probably want a pair of trail running shoes. These specially-designed shoes are built to protect your feet from rocks, roots, and other hazards. They have a specialized tread that reduces slipping on soft dirt and smooth rock and stabilizes you on uneven trails. Can I Do Other Activities Like Walking in Running Shoes? 

You can definitely walk in your running shoes. However, if you walk a lot in shoes made for running, they’ll wear down in a way that reflects it. While the difference is minimal, the outsole and tread will start to match your walking gait rather than your running gait. This is more noticeable in trail shoes worn on paved walking paths, as concrete tends to wear down tread made for trails. 

 

Running Shoe Shopping Tips

When you’re ready to buy a new pair of running shoes, keep these tips in mind:

  • Try on shoes in a store first if possible. If you’re buying online, note the company’s return policy. If you can, try on a half size above and below your regular shoe size. Many runners find that a shoe with a half-size difference fits much better than their typical size.
  • Bring a friend or ask a store associate to help identify your gait pattern while trying on shoes in person.
  • Make sure wherever you buy your shoes from has a great return policy. You’ll want to test run the shoes on a couple runs to make sure you have the right pair.
  • If it’s your first time buying shoes in a while, consider getting a professional gait analysis.

 

Did I Pick the Best Running Shoes For Me?

You’ll need to give yourself a couple runs to know if you’d made the right choice. On your first run or two in the new shoes, pay attention to these factors:

  • Pain: You don’t want to feel any acute pain in your feet, legs, or hips. Some added workout soreness is normal in new shoes, but sharp pain isn’t.
  • Gait: Does it feel easier to run in these shoes? Does it feel more difficult? The right running shoes should help you improve your stride.
  • Fit: Do the new running shoes fit your feet in a way that feels comfortable, snug, and nearly unnoticeable? Good running shoes shouldn’t distract you. No one should feel like their toes are cramped or that they’re wearing clown shoes. Over time, the shoes should feel like they are part of you.

 

How Long Should Running Shoes Last?

Running shoes should last anywhere from 300-500 miles. As shoe design has improved, this number has increased. If you’re not counting miles, consider replacing shoes every 6-8 months, depending on how often you run. To find out if you need to replace your running shoes, assess them for the following signs of wear and tear. Any of these signs indicate it’s time to replace them.

  • Tread wear: The original tread is worn in a way that makes it unrecognizable. It’s flattened completely, even in just a couple hot spots like the toe or heel.
  • Rips and tears: Shredded material affects the overall integrity of the shoe and shouldn’t be overlooked.
  • Excessive flexibility: A broken-in running shoe will be easy to bend, but not so easy that you can bend it in half.
  • Comfort: If you notice that you can “feel” the pavement more on recent runs, it’s likely that the shoes’ cushioning has worn down so much that it’s no longer reducing impact.

Maintaining & Cleaning Your Running Shoes 

While it’s difficult to prevent wear and tear in running shoes, there are a few things you can do to help keep your shoes in good shape for as long as possible. Regularly cleaning your running shoes is a great way to keep the material in good shape. Unless the manufacturer of your shoes says they are machine washable, take a warm, damp rag or soft sponge and a little dish soap and gently scrub away dirt and grime. There are two methods to clean the soles of your running shoes: wet and dry.

  • Wet: Wipe the soles down with a wet paper towel or rag. You can also hose off the bottom of the shoes to remove caked dirt and mud.
  • Dry: Use a scrubbing brush to briskly scrub dirt out of the grooves of the tread.

If you do clean your soles with water, be sure to let them dry outside. Never put them in the dryer, as the heat may affect the integrity of the shoe.
